Russia Getting New Early Warning Satellites...and not a moment too soon

And in another interesting defense related development Pavel Podvig reports that Russia intends to update its early warning satellite system which currently does not provide continuous coverage. I find this a little disturbing to put it mildly considering the likelihood of hair -trigger launch on warning status of the Strategic Rocket Forces. In this case an upgrade is probably in everyone's interest, though according to this article (in Russian) it won't be done until 2009:

"Испытания новой космической системы СПРН намечены на 2009 год"
