Independence Day Reflections

It would be hard to think of a better way to spend Independence Day than getting together with like-minded folks to demand the impeachment of the Bush-Cheney cabal. I had the opportunity to do just that at the Impeach for Peace gathering in Madison, WI today. Petitions were presented and interesting speakers gave their views. It is fitting on this day to actually review the Declaration of Independence and reflect on its relevancy for today's conditions. In particular I was struck by the following passage:

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shown , that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing the invariably the same Object, envinces a Design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to to throw off such Government, and provide new guards for their future Security."

It made sense then and makes sense now.
